A clog is either debris stuck in the tip, carbonised plastic baked onto the inside wall, or heat creep softening filament above the melt zone so it jams. The first two you can clean. Method 1: cold pull

  1. Heat to the filament’s printing temperature and push nylon or a cleaning filament through by hand until it flows clean.
  2. Drop the temperature to about 90 °C for nylon, 120 °C for PLA or cleaning filament, and hold.
  3. Pull the filament out sharply. The tip should come out shaped like the nozzle interior with the debris embedded in it.
  4. Repeat until the pulled tip is clean. Two or three pulls clears most partial clogs that cause under-extrusion.

Method 2: needle

With the hotend at temperature, push a 0.35 mm cleaning needle or an acupuncture needle up through the tip a few times, then extrude to flush. This clears tip debris and burnt residue that a cold pull leaves. Never use a needle larger than the orifice; a 0.4 mm needle in a 0.4 mm brass nozzle opens it out.

Method 3: replace

A brass nozzle that has clogged twice is either worn, contaminated with baked-on residue in the bore, or was never machined round. On an Ender-class MK8 or V6 hotend a 25-pack of brass nozzles makes replacement cheaper than the fifteen minutes a cold pull takes. Swap it hot, snugging the new nozzle against the heatbreak at temperature. On printers with a nozzle-and-heatbreak assembly, replacement is a one-minute clip-in and the maker sells the assembly.

What repeated clogs are telling you

  • Clogs only with one spool: wet or contaminated filament. Dry it.
  • Clogs mid-print on long PLA jobs: heat creep. Check the heatsink fan and drop the ambient temperature; an enclosed PLA print is the classic cause.
  • Clogs after abrasive filament: the brass is worn, not clogged. Fit hardened steel.
  • Clogs after a nozzle change: a gap between nozzle and heatbreak is letting plastic leak into the threads. Retighten hot.

FAQ

Can I burn the nozzle clean with a torch? Brass, briefly, yes; it anneals and softens the brass, and the nozzle is disposable anyway. Never on a coated or steel nozzle.

Acetone soak? Only for ABS residue. It does nothing to PLA or PETG.

How often should I replace a brass nozzle? Every few hundred hours with PLA and PETG, or the first time a print looks worse for no reason.
