Privacy policy

This page explains what data this site collects, what it does not, and which third parties are involved. It describes the site as it is actually configured, not a generic template.

The short version

This is a reference site. There are no accounts, no newsletter, no comments, and no analytics installed. Reading an article involves your browser fetching pages from our server and fonts from Google. If you follow a link to Amazon, Amazon knows you came from here.

What we collect directly

  • Server logs. Our web server records standard request information: IP address, date and time, the page requested, browser user agent and referring page. These are used for security and to diagnose faults, and are not linked to any identity.
  • Nothing else. There is no registration, no login for readers, no contact form storing submissions, and no tracking pixel of our own.

Analytics

No analytics package is installed at the time of writing. There is no Google Analytics, no Plausible and no Matomo on this site. If that changes, this page will be updated to name the provider and say what it collects, before it is switched on.

Comments

Comments are closed across the site, so no commenter name, email address or IP address is collected or stored.

Third parties your browser contacts

Loading a page here causes your browser to make requests to the following, which means those services receive your IP address and basic request information:

  • Cloudflare — this site is served through Cloudflare, which sits in front of our server for delivery and security. Cloudflare also obfuscates email addresses on the contact page to reduce spam harvesting, which is why an address may briefly appear as “[email protected]” before your browser renders it.
  • Google Fonts (fonts.googleapis.com, fonts.gstatic.com) — the typefaces used across the site are loaded from Google. Google receives your IP address when this happens.
  • Gravatar (secure.gravatar.com, operated by Automattic) — used for the author avatar image.
  • Amazon (amazon.com, m.media-amazon.com) — product images in comparison boxes are served from Amazon’s image CDN, and product links point to Amazon.

Each of these operates under its own privacy policy, which we do not control.

Affiliate links and cookies

We do not set advertising or tracking cookies of our own. When you follow an affiliate link to Amazon, Amazon may set a cookie recording that the referral came from this site, which is how a commission is attributed. That cookie is set by Amazon, on Amazon’s domain, and is governed by Amazon’s privacy notice. See our affiliate disclosure.

WordPress may set functional cookies if you interact with certain features. The site also stores your light or dark theme preference in your browser’s local storage. That value never leaves your device and is not sent to us.

Advertising

No display advertising is running at the time of writing. If and when it is, this page will be updated to name the network and describe the cookies it uses, and a consent mechanism will be in place where the law requires one.

Children

This site is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect information from them.

Data sharing and retention

We do not sell personal data, and we do not share it with anyone beyond the service providers listed above, each of which receives only what is technically necessary to serve the page. Server logs are retained only as long as needed for security and troubleshooting.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask what data is held about you, to have it corrected, or to have it deleted. Given that this site holds no accounts and runs no analytics, in practice there is usually nothing held beyond transient server logs. Requests go to [email protected].

You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, and block Google Fonts with a content blocker. The site remains fully readable either way.

Changes

Material changes to this policy will be noted here with a revised date. Adding analytics or advertising would count as a material change and would be reflected here first.
