Find your printer model number
Error codes, replacement parts and calibration procedures are all machine specific. Before following anything on this site, confirm exactly which machine you have. The difference between two similar model numbers is often the difference between a part that fits and one that destroys a hotend.
Where to look
- The label on the machine. Usually on the back or the underside, carrying the model and serial number. This is the authoritative source and the one to trust when others disagree.
- The machine’s own menu. Most printers show the model and firmware version under settings, device information or about.
- The companion app. Networked machines list the model and firmware against the registered device.
- The slicer. The selected printer profile usually names the exact variant — but it is only as accurate as whoever set it up, so treat it as a hint rather than proof.
- The original invoice. Useful when the label has worn off, and it also establishes the purchase date for warranty purposes.
Record these five things
- Exact model name, including any suffix. SE, KE, Pro, Plus, Max, Carbon and similar suffixes indicate genuinely different machines, not trim levels.
- Firmware version. Error codes, available features and even calibration routines change between versions. A code that means one thing on an older firmware may not exist on a newer one.
- Hotend type, and whether it is stock. If a previous owner or you fitted a different hotend, the nozzle format follows the hotend, not the printer.
- Nozzle diameter and material. 0.4 mm brass is the common default. Anything else changes your speed limits and your temperature profile.
- Build plate type and size. Smooth PEI, textured PEI, glass or garolite, and the exact dimensions in millimetres.
Why the suffix matters so much
Manufacturers reuse family names across machines with different hotends, different nozzle formats, different plate sizes and different firmware. Two printers sharing a family name can take entirely different replacement parts.
When ordering, match the full model designation, not the family. A listing that says it fits a family name and does not name your exact variant is not confirmation that it fits yours.
Measure rather than assume
If a part listing does not name your machine, do not assume compatibility from the family name. Check the physical specification against what is currently installed:
- Nozzles — thread size, overall length, and how the nozzle seats against the heatbreak. Thread alone is not enough; MK8 and V6 share an M6 thread and are not interchangeable.
- Build plates — length and width in millimetres, and whether the magnetic base is included or separate.
- Belts — pitch, width and whether the part is a closed loop or open length.
- Fans — dimensions, voltage and connector type. A 24 V fan on a 12 V board does nothing useful, and the reverse burns out.
- PTFE tube — inner and outer diameter. Inner diameter decides whether filament binds.
Take a photograph before you disassemble
Before removing anything, photograph the connector layout and cable routing on your phone. Reassembly from memory is where most repair sessions go wrong, and a photograph costs nothing.
When in doubt, ask the supplier
A part costs a few dollars. A hotend does not. If a compatibility table here says “not verified” for your machine, that is a genuine gap in our knowledge, not a hint that it probably works. Confirm with the seller or the manufacturer before buying, and if you find out the answer, tell us and we will add it.
