Short answer

The Z lead screw converts motor rotation into vertical movement, and any wobble or binding in it prints as regular horizontal banding at a fixed pitch. Maintenance is a thin film of PTFE-bearing grease. Oil runs off, and spray lubricants attract dust that turns into grinding paste.

What to look for

Buy a synthetic grease with PTFE rather than a general-purpose one. It stays on a vertical screw instead of running down it, it does not attack the POM or brass nut that most printers use, and a small tube lasts years. Avoid anything sold as a penetrating or spray lubricant: those are designed to creep and evaporate, which is the opposite of what a lead screw needs.

How the screw shows up in a print

A bent screw or a nut that is not free to float produces Z banding: horizontal lines at a spacing that matches one screw revolution rather than one layer. The giveaway is regularity. Banding that follows layer height is an extrusion problem; banding at a longer fixed pitch is mechanical, and the screw is the first place to look.

Backlash and why the nut should float

Most machines let the nut move slightly sideways so that a screw which is not perfectly straight does not drag the gantry with it. Bolting the nut rigidly transfers every deviation of the screw straight into the print. If your machine has an anti-backlash nut with a spring, that spring is doing the same job in the vertical direction; a seized one reintroduces the play it was fitted to remove.

How to lubricate it properly

Clean the old grease off first, because fresh grease on top of grit is worse than no grease. Apply a thin film along the thread, then jog the Z axis through its full travel a few times to distribute it. More is not better: excess grease collects dust and works as a lapping compound on the nut. A general printer tool kit usually has the brushes and picks this needs.

FAQ

How often? Once or twice a year for typical hobby use, or when the Z axis becomes audibly notchy.

Can I straighten a bent screw? Not reliably. Replace it. Straightening usually moves the bend rather than removing it.

Does a second Z screw fix banding? It helps with gantry sag, not with a bent screw. Two bent screws are worse than one.
