HMS 0500-0400-0003-0009: Bed Too Hot for the Filament

HMS 0500-0400-0003-0009 means the bed temperature exceeds the filament’s vitrification temperature, which may cause a nozzle clog, and asks you to keep the front door open. That is an unusual instruction from a printer, and the reason behind it is worth understanding.
Vitrification temperature is the glass transition point: above it, the filament softens. A chamber hotter than that softens filament inside the hotend before it should.

Where to buy
Polymaker ABS Filament Black 1KG 1.75mm, Heat Resistant, Strength
Match the material to the bed you set
A bed hot enough to need this warning is usually a bed set for ABS or ASA while PLA is loaded. If you are printing a high-temperature material, use one: ABS tolerates the chamber that PLA cannot.
Filter the air the open door lets out
Running with the door open sheds chamber heat into the room, and it sheds styrene fumes with it. A HEPA and activated-carbon room purifier sized for the space is what makes following this instruction tolerable indoors, because carbon is the part that takes the smell rather than just the particles.
Put a detector where you will hear it
A photoelectric smoke alarm within a few metres of the machine is the minimum for any printer left running, and it is worth having regardless of what you print. A warning about a hot bed is a good moment to check you have one.
Then do what the message says
Open the front door to let the chamber cool, and check the material profile against the bed temperature before the next job. The warning is predictive, so acting on it prevents the clog rather than clearing one.
How HMS 0500-0400-0003-0009 differs from a module fault
Chamber control failing is HMS 0500-0300-0001-0023. This code is working control reporting an unwise combination of settings.
What it leads to if ignored
Softened filament in the hotend jams, which is the symptom set in clearing a clogged nozzle. Material choices are compared in ASA versus ABS and plate temperatures in bed temperature.
HMS 0500-0400-0003-0009 FAQ
What is vitrification temperature?
The glass transition point, where the filament starts to soften.
Why open the door?
To drop the chamber temperature below that point.
Is this a fault?
No. It is a prediction based on your settings.
Can I just ignore it?
You can, and then you clear a clog instead.
Chamber heat has a second, quieter message. HMS 0300-9100-0001-000C means the heater has run at full load for a long time, which is either a chamber that leaks heat or a sensor reading low.
