Short answer

The A1 mini Combo adds the four-spool AMS lite to the A1 mini. It is the cheapest way into multi-colour printing that works reliably. Buy the Combo if colour or dissolvable supports are the point; buy the A1 mini alone if you print one material at a time, because on small parts purge waste is a large share of the filament used.

Where to buy

What changes

A1 mini vs A1 mini Combo
Item A1 mini A1 mini Combo
Printer 180 × 180 × 180 mm, 300 °C, 80 °C bed Same
Filament inputs 1 spool holder AMS lite, 4 spools, plus external
Multi-colour No Yes, one nozzle with purge
Runout backup No Yes with a matching spool loaded
Desk footprint Printer only Printer plus AMS lite alongside
Filament exposure 1 spool in room air 4 spools in room air

The purge problem at small sizes

Every colour change flushes the old filament out of the single nozzle. On a 256 mm printer, a big model dilutes that cost; on 180 mm parts a four-colour keychain can spend more filament on purge than on the model. Bambu Studio can reduce flush volumes and use purge as infill, and a poop bucket keeps the waste off the desk. If your multi-colour plans are small logos and lettering, expect that ratio.

When the Combo is right

  • Multi-colour toys, signs and models for children, where painting is not an option.
  • PLA with a PLA support interface that peels cleanly; see support material for PLA.
  • Small farms that want automatic spool switching on runout.

When it is not

  • Functional single-colour printing. The printer alone plus a spare plate is the better spend.
  • Humid rooms; four exposed spools need a drying routine. The enclosed AMS is P and X series only; see AMS vs AMS lite.
  • TPU: it does not go through the AMS lite.
