Bambu Lab A1 Combo: When the AMS lite Earns Its Place

The A1 Combo is the A1 plus the AMS lite, a four-spool open feeder for multi-colour and multi-material printing. Buy it if you will print multi-colour models or use dissolvable supports. Buy the A1 alone if you print one material at a time; the AMS lite adds purge waste, a bigger footprint and exposed spools.
Where to buy
What the AMS lite is
A four-slot filament changer that sits beside the printer and feeds one spool at a time into the single hotend. Colour changes happen by purging the old filament into a poop chute, so a four-colour model spends filament and time on every swap. It is not enclosed; the spools sit in room air.
| Item | A1 | A1 Combo |
|---|---|---|
| Printer | A1, 256 × 256 × 256 mm | Same |
| Filament slots | 1 external spool holder | 4 (AMS lite) + external |
| Multi-colour | No | Yes, single nozzle with purge |
| Automatic spool switching on runout | No | Yes, if a matching spool is loaded |
| Footprint | Printer only | Printer plus AMS lite beside it |
| Filament storage | Spool exposed | Four spools exposed |
When it earns its place
- Multi-colour models, sign lettering, logos and toys where paint is not an option.
- PLA with a PLA-specific support interface, which peels cleanly; see support material for PLA.
- Long jobs where automatic switch to a backup spool on runout saves a print.
When it does not
- Single-colour functional printing. The AMS lite then costs money and desk space to hold three idle spools.
- Humid rooms without a plan for drying; the open design means PETG and nylon absorb moisture between uses.
- TPU. The AMS lite does not handle soft filament; TPU goes through the external spool holder.
What to know about purge waste
Each colour change purges a few grams. A busy four-colour print can waste more filament than it uses in the model. Bambu Studio lets you reduce flush volumes and reuse purge as infill; the A1 upgrades article lists the poop-chute and bucket accessories that keep the mess contained.
The units in the box
The listings are the A1 Combo with the AMS lite and a lamp kit, and the A1 on its own.
FAQ
Can I add the AMS lite later? Yes; it is sold separately and connects to the A1 with a cable and PTFE tubes.
Does the AMS lite fit the P1S? No. The P and X series use the enclosed AMS.
Does the A1 Combo print faster? No; multi-colour prints are slower because of purging.
