HMS 0700-9600-0001-0001 — AMS drying thermal runaway
Short answer

HMS 0700-9600-0001-0001 means AMS drying may be experiencing thermal runaway, and it asks you to power off the AMS immediately. That instruction is not a formality: thermal runaway means heat is going in and the control loop is no longer able to stop it.

Do the one thing the message asks before you investigate anything. The diagnosis will still be there in a minute.

Power it off first. Read the rest afterwards.

Where to buy

Have the means to smother a fire

A fire blanket beside a machine that heats unattended is a reasonable thing to own, and it deals with a contained fire without the mess an extinguisher makes of electronics. Buy it before you need it, not after.

Fit a detector that reacts to heat

A heat detector triggers on temperature rather than smoke, which makes it the right sensor for a workshop where dust and fumes would false-trigger a smoke alarm. It is the alarm that actually works in the room a printer lives in.

Limit how long it can run unattended

A mechanical outlet timer caps a drying cycle at a few hours whether or not the firmware agrees. It is crude, it is mechanical, and that is exactly why it still works when the control loop does not.

Then find out what failed

Once it is off and cool, look at the sensor and the element separately. Runaway almost always means the sensor stopped reporting the rise while the heater kept going.

How HMS 0700-9600-0001-0001 differs from abnormal heating

A heater simply disagreeing with its sensor is HMS 0700-8000-0001-0004. Runaway is the escalated version, which is why the wording changes.

When the fault is electrical

A shorted heater reports HMS 0700-8000-0001-0003. What drying should look like is covered in filament dryers and drying filament.

HMS 0700-9600-0001-0001 FAQ

Should I really power it off?

Yes, at the wall, immediately. That is the whole message.

Can I restart it afterwards?

Not for drying until you know what failed.

Is a smoke alarm enough?

In a dusty workshop a heat detector is the better sensor.

What usually causes it?

A sensor that stopped tracking while the heater kept going.

Some codes want a procedure rather than a part. HMS 0700-8600-0001-0004 means the AMS is not correctly bound to the Track Switch, so the hardware is fine and the configuration behind it is not.
