Short answer

The machine tried to retract the filament and it would not come. Usually the tip has mushroomed inside the melt zone, or the hotend was not hot enough for the material actually loaded.

Difficulty moderate Time 20-30 min Parts none Tools Flush cutters, tweezers, hex keys

Bambu reports a failure to pull filament out of the extruder, asking you to check whether the extruder is clogged or the filament is broken inside. This fires during unload and filament change rather than during printing.

Affected machines: A2L, P2S, X1 series, X2D.

The mushroom problem

Filament sitting in a hot melt zone swells slightly and takes the shape of the chamber. When it cools it forms a plug wider than the channel above it — the classic mushroom. The extruder can push it forwards but not pull it back, which is exactly what this error describes.

Symptom

Unload or filament change aborts, filament will not retract

Most likely cause

Deformed filament tip or a partial clog gripping the strand

The fix
  1. Heat the hotend to the correct temperature for the material actually loaded. If someone changed from PETG to PLA in the slicer, the machine may be heating 20 degC too low to release it.
  2. Extrude 20 mm first, then retract. Pushing forward breaks the seal and reshapes the tip.
  3. Disengage the extruder idler and pull the filament by hand, firmly and straight, with the hotend hot.
  4. If it still resists, do a cold pull: heat, push, cool to the pull temperature, then pull. The plug comes out with the strand.
  5. Inspect what comes out. A mushroomed tip confirms the diagnosis; a ragged tip with black flecks means burnt residue in the melt zone.
Correct unload temperature by material
PropertyValue
PLA 200-220 degC
PETG 230-250 degC
ABS / ASA 240-260 degC
TPU 215-235 degC
PA-CF 260-290 degC
Safety

Pulling filament by hand from a hot nozzle means your hands are near a 250 degC heater block. Grip the filament well above the toolhead and pull along the axis of the tube, not at an angle.
