Hardened Steel Nozzle: When Brass Is Not Enough, and How to Pick One That Fits

Fit a hardened steel nozzle before the first spool of any abrasive filament: carbon fibre, glass fibre, glow-in-the-dark, wood, metal-filled or sparkle blends. Match the thread to your hotend, expect to print 5 to 10 °C hotter than brass, and buy from a maker with a stated hardness, because unhardened steel sold as hardened is common.
Brass is soft. A single spool of carbon-fibre PETG will open a 0.4 mm brass orifice to 0.5 and round off the tip, and the print quality decays so gradually that you blame the slicer. Hardened tool steel does not wear at these loads, which is the whole case for it. The costs are thermal, because steel conducts heat worse than brass, and financial, because a good hardened nozzle costs several brass ones. Where to buy
What to check
- Thread and length. MK8, V6, Volcano or a brand assembly; the thread guide tells you which. A hardened nozzle in the wrong thread is a wasted part.
- Stated hardness. Reputable makers quote a Rockwell figure, typically HRC 55 to 62. A listing that only says “hardened” with no number is a red flag; a lot of plain stainless is sold under that word and wears nearly as fast as brass.
- Bore finish. A polished bore resists clogging. Cheap hardened nozzles have a rough drilled bore that catches fibres.
- Orifice size. 0.4 mm is fine for CF filaments; 0.6 mm clogs less with high fibre loads and prints faster. Many people run 0.6 mm for anything filled.
- Plated or coated variants. Nickel or tungsten-carbide coatings improve heat transfer and release. Good if you print a lot of abrasive; not necessary for occasional use.

The listed nozzles are hardened steel in the common MK8 and brand-assembly formats. Check the thread against your hotend, look for the stated hardness in the listing, and note that the Bambu Lab-style options come as a complete hotend-and-nozzle unit because those printers do not take a bare nozzle.
Printing with it
- Raise the nozzle temperature 5 to 10 °C from your brass profile. Steel moves heat to the plastic more slowly.
- Slow down 10 to 20 % on the first prints and watch for under-extrusion; raise temperature or lower speed until it clears.
- Run an all-metal or high-temperature hotend if you print CF nylon; the nozzle is not the limit, the heat break is.
- Keep the brass nozzle for PLA if you want the best surface at low temperatures; swap back when the abrasive job is done, or just leave the steel in.
When you do not need one
PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA and TPU without additives never need hardened steel. Silk and matte blends are not abrasive. The abrasive filament list is the reference: fibre, glow, wood, metal, sparkle.
FAQ
Hardened steel or ruby? Ruby-tipped nozzles are harder still and keep brass thermal performance; they are fragile and expensive. Hardened steel is the sensible choice.
Does a hardened nozzle affect PLA? Slightly: a few degrees more heat and a fraction less shine. Most people cannot tell.
How long does it last? Years of abrasive printing. If a hardened nozzle wears in months, it was not hardened.
