Silicone Mat for 3D Printing: What It Is For, and Why It Is Not a Print Surface

A silicone mat is a work surface, not a build surface: it goes under the resin printer or wash station to catch drips and alcohol, and beside the filament printer for sanding, gluing and support removal. Buy one with a raised lip larger than the printer footprint. Nothing about it belongs on the heated bed.
The word mat confuses two different things. People searching for a PLA mat or a 3D printer mat sometimes mean a bed surface, which is a PEI sheet and a different product. What is actually sold as a printer mat is a heat- and chemical-resistant silicone sheet with a raised edge. Its job is to save the desk. Resin, isopropyl alcohol, cyanoacrylate glue and hot PLA stubs all bounce off silicone, and a lip keeps a spilled wash tub from reaching the floor.

What it is good for
- Under a resin printer and wash station. Every drip of resin lands somewhere; the mat is where. Wipe with alcohol and it is clean.
- Post-processing filament prints. Cutting supports, sanding, deburring and gluing without scratching the desk or losing small parts off the edge.
- A heat-tolerant pad for a hot nozzle or a freshly removed hotend.
- Grip. Parts do not slide while you work on them.
What to look for
- Size larger than the printer base with the lip outside the feet, so a spill under the printer stays on the mat.
- A raised edge of a few millimetres all round.
- Platinum-cured silicone; cheap sheets smell and stain.
- Thickness of 2 mm or more so it lies flat and does not curl.
- Light colour if you use it for resin, so drips are visible.
The mats in the box

What not to do with it
Do not put it on the heated bed. Silicone is an insulator; parts will not stick, the heater works harder, and the mat eventually cooks. If the search that brought you here was about parts not sticking to the bed, the answer is a PEI plate and the first-layer guide, not a mat.

Can I cure resin on the mat? Yes; drips cure in sunlight on it and peel off.
Does alcohol damage silicone? No. Acetone over time can; wipe it off.
Is a cutting mat the same thing? A PVC cutting mat is not resin or alcohol proof and will stain.
