White 3D printed model on a printer build plate
Short answer

Textured PEI for almost everything, especially PETG. Smooth PEI when you want a glossy flat bottom face and are willing to manage adhesion with a release agent.

Smooth vs textured PEI
PropertyValue
Bottom surface smooth glossy, textured matte with plate pattern
Adhesion strength smooth very high, textured high
Release when cool smooth can be difficult, textured easy
PETG behaviour smooth may bond and tear, textured safe
Durability smooth scratches visibly, textured hides marks
Needs glue stick smooth for PETG and ABS, textured rarely

The PETG problem with smooth PEI

PETG chemically bonds to smooth PEI. When it cools and contracts it can pull the PEI coating off the steel, taking a visible patch with it. The plate is then permanently damaged in that spot. A glue stick layer prevents this by giving the PETG something else to hold onto — it is a release agent, not an adhesive.

What fits: textured PEI spring steel sheet
Printer Verdict Notes
PLA Fits no preparation needed
PETG Fits the safe default for PETG
ABS / ASA Fits glue stick still helps at the corners
TPU Fits low bed temperature
PA / Nylon Fits with a mod needs glue stick or a garolite plate

Looking after either one

Symptom

Adhesion getting worse over time on a plate that used to work

Most likely cause

Surface contamination or wear

The fix
  1. Wash with dish soap and hot water. IPA alone smears oils rather than removing them.
  2. Handle by the edges only, always.
  3. Do not use metal scrapers. They gouge the coating and create high spots that show up in the levelling mesh.
  4. Let the plate cool before removing a print. Most parts release themselves as the plate contracts.
  5. Replace the sheet when the coating is visibly worn or patchy. It is consumable.

Sizing

Plate size is machine specific and there is no forgiveness. Measure your existing sheet before ordering — a sheet a few millimetres out will not sit correctly on the magnetic base and will foul the probe or the gantry.
