Hardened nozzles: when abrasive filament makes them necessary

Short answer

If you print carbon fibre, glass fibre, glow-in-the-dark or metal-filled filament, brass will not survive it. Move to hardened steel and accept slightly worse heat transfer, or keep replacing brass nozzles and wondering why quality drifts.

What wear actually looks like

A worn nozzle does not fail suddenly. The bore goes oval and slightly larger, so extrusion width drifts, walls thin out and dimensional accuracy declines. It happens slowly enough that most people blame the filament, the slicer, or the weather. Compare a fresh print against one from six months ago and the difference is obvious.

Raise the temperature when you switch

Hardened steel conducts heat less well than brass. Running the same profile after a swap gives you slightly cooler plastic than before, which shows up as poor layer bonding. Add 5-10 degC and reprint your temperature tower.

Fitment matters more than material

Buying the right material in the wrong thread destroys a hotend. MK8, V6, Volcano and the Bambu format look similar and are not interchangeable. Check what your machine takes before ordering.
