A second nozzle removes purge waste and lets one job mix materials or nozzle sizes. Current options: Bambu H2D (fixed dual nozzle, 65 °C chamber) and X2D (dual nozzle plus tool changer, 256 mm), Prusa XL (1 to 5 toolheads, 360 mm), Prusa CORE One+ with INDX (4 to 8 tools), Snapmaker U1 (4 toolheads). Legacy IDEX like the Sovol SV04 is used-only. If you only want colours in PLA, a single-nozzle AMS Combo is cheaper.

What two nozzles solve
- Soluble supports. PVA or BVOH in the second nozzle, model in the first, no cross-contamination and no purge tower. See support materials.
- Two engineering materials. PA-CF body, TPU gasket, one print.
- Two nozzle sizes. 0.2 mm skin, 0.6 mm infill; halves print time on large detailed parts.
- Zero purge. On a four-colour model this can save a third of the filament.
What they cost you
- Price, in every case above a single-nozzle Combo.
- Complexity: two hotends to maintain, nozzle alignment, and on toolchangers, dock calibration.
- Build volume on fixed dual nozzle machines, where the second nozzle cannot reach the full bed.
When an AMS is enough
