Short answer

Why IDEX faded

IDEX was the hobby answer to dual material for a decade. It gives duplicate and mirror modes, printing two identical parts at once, which nothing else does. But the second carriage sits idle during most single-material prints, alignment between heads drifts, and the wide gantry limits speed. The Sovol SV04 is the last mainstream IDEX and is legacy; see the Sovol lineup.

Dual nozzle versus toolchanger

The Bambu H2D and X2D put two hotends on one carriage and lift the idle one. Swaps are near-instant and the machine stays compact, at the cost of a slightly smaller shared build area. A toolchanger docks heads, so it scales to five or eight tools and mixes nozzle sizes freely, but each swap takes seconds and the frame is larger. For two materials the dual nozzle wins on simplicity; for three or more, only a toolchanger does it without purge. See dual nozzle printers and the Prusa XL.

When single-nozzle is still right
