Key figures for A1 mini Multi Color: Four Slots, Strict Limits: 4 AMS lite spools, 1 unit, no chaining, 0 °C drying.
Short answer

Multi-colour on an A1 mini means the AMS lite: four spools on open rotary holders, RFID reading on Bambu filament, no drying, and a strict material list. It is a single unit, so four colours is the ceiling; the AMS lite does not chain the way the sealed AMS does on P1 and X1 machines. The unit is 397 x 208 x 342 mm and 1.6 kg, which is wider than the printer it feeds.

The A1 mini plus AMS lite is one of the cheapest routes into genuine multi-colour printing, and for small models it is a good one. The limits are worth knowing before you order, because they are more specific than most product pages admit.

Four colours, and only four

The sealed AMS used on the P1 and X1 series chains up to four units for sixteen filaments. The AMS lite does not chain. One unit, four slots, that is the maximum on an A1 or A1 mini.

For most models that is plenty. Four colours covers the vast majority of multi-colour prints on Printables and MakerWorld, and each colour change on a single-nozzle machine costs purge material anyway, so more slots would not be free.

The material list is the real constraint

Supported: PLA, PETG, ASA, PET, PA, PC, dried PVA, dried BVOH, PP, POM, HIPS and Bambu PLA-CF.

Not recommended: Bambu PLA Glow, Bambu PETG-CF, and generic glow-in-the-dark PLA. These cause loading errors and wear the mechanism faster.

Unsupported: TPE, TPU, wet PVA, wet BVOH, PET-CF, PA6-CF, TPU 95A, and any other carbon or glass filled filament.

Note what that means in practice on an A1 mini. Since the printer has no enclosure, ABS is off the table anyway, so the working palette for multi-colour is PLA and PETG. That is not a problem for the models people actually print on a small machine, but it does mean the AMS lite is a colour tool rather than a materials tool.

Spools must be 40 to 68 mm wide with an inner hole of 53 to 58 mm. Third-party spools outside that range will not seat on the rotary holders.

The features worth more than colour

Filament backup. Load the same material in two slots and the printer continues onto the second spool when the first runs out. On a small machine that runs long multi-part jobs, this saves prints and lets you finish partial spools.

Support material. A second slot loaded with snap-away or dissolvable support turns a fiddly cleanup into a clean break, and on detailed small models that is the difference between a good print and a scarred one.

Plan the bench first

This is the practical catch. The AMS lite stands beside the printer, not on it, and at 397 mm wide it takes more space than the A1 mini. Allow around 700 mm of width for the pair. If you chose the mini specifically for a small desk, decide now whether the changer fits.

Our A1 mini AMS page has the setup detail, AMS vs AMS lite compares the two systems, and the A1 mini overview covers the printer.

Frequently asked questions

How many colours can an A1 mini print? Four, with one AMS lite. It does not chain to more.

Can it do multi-colour TPU? No. TPU and TPE are unsupported in the AMS lite.

Does the AMS lite dry filament? No. There is no heater and no sealed chamber.

Will any spool fit? Only 40 to 68 mm wide with a 53 to 58 mm inner hole.
