Upgrade in this order and stop when the prints are good enough: a filament dryer, a textured PEI plate, an auto bed leveling probe, Klipper with input shaping, a direct-drive extruder, then an all-metal or high-flow hotend. Skip decorative upgrades, dual-Z kits on printers that do not sag, and anything that adds weight to the toolhead without a reason.
The upgrade market for budget printers is huge because the printers are cheap and the parts are cheap, and because every forum thread has a different first recommendation. Most of it does not change what comes off the bed. The upgrades that matter attack the actual causes of bad prints, which are wet filament, a bad first layer, and a frame that shakes at speed, in roughly that order of frequency.

The order, and why
- Filament dryer. Wet filament causes more failed prints than every mechanical fault combined, and it looks like a mechanical fault. Dry the filament before you blame the printer.
- Textured PEI spring-steel plate. Replaces glue, tape and scraping with a surface that grips hot and releases cold. Fixes most first-layer adhesion problems for the price of a spool.
- Auto bed leveling probe. A mesh follows a warped bed so the first layer is even everywhere. The biggest single quality-of-life change on a printer that ships without one.
- Klipper with input shaping. Lets the same frame print two to three times faster without ringing. Needs a host board; see input shaping.
- Direct-drive extruder. Unlocks TPU and cuts retraction to a millimetre. Do this when you want flexible filament or cannot tune stringing out.
- All-metal or high-flow hotend. Only when a material needs 260 °C or you have measured that flow is the speed limit.
What to skip, usually
- Dual-Z kits on a printer whose gantry is not sagging. Measure first; most are fine.
- Metal extruder arms as a first upgrade. Fix a cracked plastic arm, yes; replace a working one, no.
- Linear rails on a bed-slinger. Expensive, fiddly, and input shaping gets you further.
- Silent stepper drivers if the board already has them; most current boards do.
- Anything cosmetic on the toolhead. Weight there costs quality at speed.
