Short answer

For ABS, ASA or nylon in an enclosure you want a filter with both a HEPA stage for ultrafine particles and an activated-carbon stage for styrene and other VOCs. For a resin printer the carbon stage is the important one. For PLA on an open desk, a filter is optional; open a window.

Every hot nozzle sheds ultrafine particles, and every styrene-based plastic, ABS and ASA, releases a sweet-smelling VOC as it melts. Resin adds its own VOC load from the vat and the alcohol wash. A filter is not a substitute for a window, but for a printer that runs for twenty hours in an enclosure it is the difference between a room you can work in and one you cannot.

What each filter stage does

  • HEPA. Captures particles down to 0.3 micron with 99.97 % efficiency, which covers the ultrafine particles a hot nozzle emits. Does nothing for smell.
  • Activated carbon. Adsorbs VOCs: styrene from ABS and ASA, the sweet smell of resin. Saturates in weeks of heavy use and must be replaced. Does nothing for particles.
  • Fan. A filter only cleans the air that passes through it. Look for a stated airflow; a tiny USB fan behind a carbon pad barely moves the air in an enclosure.

What to buy for which printer

  • Enclosed FDM printing ABS, ASA or nylon: a combined HEPA-plus-carbon unit inside the enclosure, or an inline duct fan pushing enclosure air outside. Ducting outside beats any filter.
  • Resin printer: a carbon purifier sized for the enclosure, plus ventilation while the vat is open. The mini purifiers sold for resin printers are carbon-only and fit inside the printer’s hood.
  • PLA and PETG on an open printer: a window and a room air purifier if you want one. Dedicated printer filters add little here.

The units in the box

The Elegoo and Anycubic mini purifiers are the small carbon units designed to sit inside a resin printer’s hood: quiet, powered from the printer or a USB adaptor, and effective at knocking the resin smell down but not at particles. The Elegoo Marsmate is a larger carbon purifier with a proper fan and a stated TVOC reduction, sized for a resin enclosure or a small FDM tent printing ASA. For an FDM enclosure running ABS daily, pair a carbon unit like this with a HEPA stage or duct the air outside.

Setting it up

  1. Put the filter inside the enclosure at head height of the print, not on the floor of the tent where cool air sits.
  2. Run it from ten minutes before the print until an hour after; VOCs keep coming off a cooling ABS part.
  3. Replace carbon cartridges on the maker’s schedule, sooner if you smell styrene through a running filter.
  4. Keep a window cracked anyway. Filters reduce; they do not eliminate.

When you do not need one

PLA on an open desk in a ventilated room. Occasional PETG. Anything printed with the window open. Spend the money on a dryer first, an enclosure second, and a filter when you commit to ASA or ABS.

FAQ

Is a carbon-only filter enough for ABS? It handles the smell, not the ultrafine particles. For regular ABS printing add a HEPA stage or vent outside.

Does an enclosure with a filter make resin printing safe indoors? Safer. You still wear gloves, and you still ventilate when the hood is open.

How often do I change the carbon? Light use, three to six months. Daily ABS, monthly.
