3D Printers for D&D Terrain: Big Beds, PLA and Layer Lines That Look Like Stone

Terrain rewards size and cheap filament, not resolution, which makes it the ideal FDM job. A Bambu A1 mini handles tiles, doors and scatter; an A1 or Creality K1 Max prints full buildings and 256 to 300 mm walls in one piece; an Ender-5 Max at 400 mm prints modular board sections. Print in PLA at 0.2 mm layers with a 0.4 mm nozzle, or 0.6 mm for speed; the layer lines read as stone once primed and washed.

Settings that sell the look
- 0.2 mm layers on a 0.4 mm nozzle for stonework; 0.28 mm on a 0.6 mm nozzle for plain walls and floors.
- Two or three walls, 10 to 15 percent infill. Terrain is handled, not stressed.
- Fuzzy skin in the slicer for rock; randomised seams; matte PLA.
- Textured plate gives a natural underside; see smooth vs textured.
- Prime, base coat, wash, drybrush. Layer lines vanish into the texture.
Filament
PLA. Buy it by the kilogram; a single dungeon set uses several spools. Grey or stone-coloured matte PLA saves a priming step. See PLA.
Where resin fits
Statues, gargoyles and detailed doors that sit at eye level can be resin; everything else is FDM. See printers for miniatures and large format printers for the 400 mm options.
The units in the box
The listings are the A1, the K1 Max and the Ender-5 Max.
FAQ
Do I need an enclosure for terrain? No; PLA on an open frame is ideal.
Multi-colour terrain? Possible with an AMS or CFS; painting is cheaper and looks better.
