Key figures for 3D Printing Automotive Parts: What Is Realistic on a Desktop Printer: 90 °C interior, 150 °C engine bay.
Short answer

Desktop printers make good interior trim, brackets, cable clips, ducts, gauge pods, phone mounts, badge blanks, jigs and test-fit prototypes. They should never make brake, steering, suspension, fuel, restraint or structural parts. Interior parts need ASA or ABS on an enclosed printer; engine-bay parts need PA-CF, PPA or PPS on a heated-chamber machine; jigs and templates can be PLA on anything.

Materials by location

Interiors reach 70 to 90 °C in summer; PLA sags, PETG softens, ASA and ABS hold. Engine bays run 100 to 150 °C; only nylon-family and PPS blends survive, and they need a 60 °C chamber to print without cracking. See ASA and printers for car parts for the printer ladder.

Design rules

  • Orient layers along the load path; a bracket printed flat snaps at the layers.
  • Add fillets and 2 to 3 mm walls; sharp inside corners crack in ABS.
  • Use metal inserts or through-bolts for fasteners; printed threads strip.
  • Anneal PA and PPA parts for heat resistance; account for shrink.
  • Test fit in PLA, then print the real part in the target material.

Printers

Passive enclosure for ASA: Elegoo Centauri Carbon, Creality K1C, Bambu P2S. Heated chamber for nylon-family: Qidi Q2 and Plus 4, Creality K2 Plus, Bambu H2S. See printers for functional parts.

FAQ

Can I sell printed car parts? Trim and accessories, with clear material and use disclaimers; nothing safety related.

PETG for a dashboard mount? It will droop in a hot car; use ASA.
