A functional part is one that carries load, heat or wear, which means PETG at minimum and usually ASA, nylon, PC or a fibre blend. The printer therefore needs 280 °C or more, an enclosure, a hardened nozzle path and dimensional repeatability. Passive enclosures (Bambu P2S, Centauri Carbon, K1C) cover PETG, ASA and ABS. Heated chambers (Qidi Plus 4 and Q2, Creality K2 Plus, Prusa CORE One, Bambu H2S) cover nylon and PC. Pick the level by the hottest material you will actually use.
Where to buy
Material sets the printer
| Material | Use | Printer level |
|---|---|---|
| PETG | Brackets, enclosures, indoor | Any current printer |
| ASA / ABS | Outdoor, automotive interior, heat to about 90 °C | Passive enclosure |
| Nylon, PA-CF | Gears, hinges, snap fits, wear | Heated chamber preferred; hardened nozzle |
| Polycarbonate | Heat to about 110 °C, impact | Heated chamber, 300 °C |
| PPA-CF, PPS-CF | Under-hood, chemical resistance | Heated chamber 60 °C+, 350 °C+ |
Printers by level
| Printer | Build volume | Chamber | Nozzle | Best for |

| Bambu P2S | 256 mm | Passive | 300 °C | PETG, ASA, ABS; AMS 2 Pro drying |
| Elegoo Centauri Carbon | 256 mm | Passive | 320 °C, hardened | Same plus CF blends stock |
| Creality K1C | 220 × 220 × 250 mm | Passive | 300 °C, hardened | Compact engineering parts |
| Qidi Q2 | 270 × 270 × 256 mm | 65 °C | 370 °C | Nylon, PC on a desk |
| Qidi Plus 4 | 305 × 305 × 280 mm | 65 °C | 370 °C | Nylon, PC, PPA at size |
| Creality K2 Plus | 350 mm | 60 °C | 350 °C | Large engineering parts |
| Prusa CORE One+ | 250 × 220 × 270 mm | 55 °C | 290 °C | Repeatability, open source, INDX |
| Bambu H2S | 340 × 320 × 340 mm | 65 °C | 350 °C | Full range, polished software |
Repeatability
Functional parts must fit. Look for nozzle-contact or load-cell bed probing (Bambu, Prusa, Qidi, Creality K2), auto flow calibration (Bambu) and a stiff frame. Calibrate flow per filament and print a tolerance test before a real part; see filament for strength.
Picks
- Most people: P2S Combo. PETG and ASA with dried filament cover most functional work.
- Nylon and PC users: Qidi Plus 4, the cheapest heated 300 mm class. See nylon.
- CF blends daily: see printers for carbon fibre.

FAQ
Is PLA ever functional? Indoors, at room temperature, under light load, yes.
Resin for functional parts? Only engineering resins; standard resin is brittle.
