Deburring a 3D print: a swivel blade fixes elephant foot and seam lines, works best in two light passes, and does not remove layer lines on faces.
Short answer

A deburring tool has a blade that swivels in its holder, so it follows the edge rather than digging into it. That is the whole advantage over a hobby knife: it takes a controlled chamfer off a printed edge without skating across the face or into your finger.

What to look for

Most 3D printing finishing kits bundle a swivel deburring handle with spare blades, scrapers and files, which is usually better value than buying the deburring tool alone. Look for replaceable blades: the swivel head is the part that wears, and a kit with no spares becomes disposable.

What it fixes on a print

Three defects respond well. The first layer flare known as elephant foot leaves a lip around the base that stops parts sitting flat; a single pass removes it. Support contact points leave rough witness marks on overhang faces. And the seam line where each layer starts leaves a raised bead that a swivel blade shaves flush without flattening the surrounding wall.

Why not just use a knife

A fixed blade cuts along its own axis, so any wobble becomes a gouge in the face of the part. The swivel head keeps the cutting edge tangent to the edge you are following, which both improves the result and removes the moment where the blade jumps. If you have ever slipped while cleaning a support off, that is the failure mode the tool is designed around, and it is also why stubborn supports are better addressed in the slicer than at the bench.

Technique in one paragraph

Light pressure, shallow angle, pull rather than push, and let the swivel find the edge. Trying to remove the whole lip in one pass tears rather than cuts, especially in PETG, which is tough and tends to peel in strings. Two light passes give a cleaner chamfer than one heavy one. A general printer tool kit usually covers the rest of the finishing bench.

FAQ

Does it work on PETG and TPU? On PETG yes, with light passes. TPU is too elastic to cut cleanly; trim it with sharp flush cutters instead.

Will it remove layer lines? No. It works on edges. Layer lines on a face need sanding instead.

Is elephant foot better fixed in the slicer? Yes, by correcting first layer squish. Deburring is the remedy for prints you already have.
