Key figures for Water Washable Resin: The Convenience, the Catch, and How to Dispose of the Water: 405 nm, 0 IPA needed.
Short answer

Water-washable resin lets you rinse prints under the tap instead of in isopropyl alcohol, which is the whole appeal. The cost is a cured part that is more brittle and that slowly absorbs water and goes cloudy, plus rinse water that is still contaminated and must be cured in sunlight before disposal. Good for beginners and for parts that are not handled hard.

Standard resin needs an alcohol wash because it will not mix with water. Water-washable formulations add a component that lets tap water carry the uncured resin away, and for someone who dreads buying and storing litres of alcohol that is a real improvement. The chemistry that makes it rinseable is also what makes the cured part hygroscopic: over weeks it absorbs moisture from the air, turns slightly cloudy and loses toughness. It is a trade, not a free upgrade.

What you gain

  • No alcohol to buy, store or ventilate for.
  • Rinsing is faster and less fiddly, especially for a small first printer.
  • Lower odour than most standard resins.

What you give up

  • Toughness. Water-washable parts snap more easily; miniatures lose swords and spear tips.
  • Stability. Cured parts absorb moisture over time; seal them with varnish if they will sit out.
  • Detail, slightly. Most formulations are a little softer on fine edges than a good standard resin.
  • The waste problem does not go away. The rinse water carries dissolved resin. It must be left in sunlight until the resin cures out, filtered, and the solids binned; never down the drain uncured.

What to check on the bottle

  • 405 nm, like all consumer LCD resins.
  • Published exposure settings for your printer.
  • Stated shrinkage and hardness; makers who publish them have tested them.
  • Low-odour formulation if you print indoors.

The bottles in the box

The listed water-washable resins are the common 405 nm formulations with published printer presets. Start with one bottle, run an exposure calibration, and judge the brittleness on a test print before buying a bundle.

Using it well

  1. Rinse in two containers of water: dirty first, clean second. Agitate gently for two to three minutes each.
  2. Dry fully before curing; water left in crevices blooms white.
  3. Cure a little less than standard resin; over-curing makes it more brittle still.
  4. Cure the rinse water in sunlight until the resin precipitates, filter through paper, and bin the solids. Reuse the clear water for the next dirty rinse.
  5. If supports tear the surface, it is exposure, not the resin type.

When standard resin is better

Anything handled, anything with thin features, anything that will sit in a humid room. Standard resin plus a wash-and-cure station is the better long-term setup; water-washable is the better first bottle.

FAQ

Is water-washable resin non-toxic? No. It is still a skin sensitiser. Gloves and ventilation apply.

Can I mix it with standard resin? Do not; the wash behaviour becomes unpredictable.

Why did my parts turn cloudy after a month? Moisture absorption. Seal with a clear coat after curing.
