Best Filament for the Bambu Lab A1 and A1 Mini: What the Open Frame and the AMS Lite Change

Short answer

On an A1 or A1 mini print PLA, PETG and TPU 95A; skip ABS, ASA and nylon, because the frame is open and they warp without an enclosure. Any 1.75 mm plastic spool feeds the AMS lite; Bambu’s own PLA adds RFID auto-loading, and a high-speed PLA or PETG blend makes the most of the A1’s fast hotend. Feed TPU from the external holder, not the AMS lite.

The A1 line is a bed-slinger with a high-flow hotend and, on the combo, the AMS lite four-spool unit. Two facts about that setup decide the filament: the frame is open, so anything that shrinks a lot as it cools will lift or crack; and the AMS lite feeds through a fairly direct path but is not rated for flexible filament. Within those limits the A1 prints almost anything well, and fast.

Materials that suit the A1

  • PLA and PLA+. The A1’s home material. A high-speed blend uses the hotend’s flow; a standard blend prints perfectly well.
  • PETG. Works well on the open frame in a warm room; dry it, and use textured PEI. Rapid or high-speed PETG blends suit the A1’s speeds.
  • TPU 95A. Prints on the A1’s direct-drive toolhead from the external spool holder. Do not run it through the AMS lite.
  • ABS and ASA. Small parts in a warm room, sometimes. Not reliable without an enclosure.
  • Nylon and PC. No; open frame and moisture.

What to look for on a spool for the AMS lite

  • Plastic spool, standard 1 kg dimensions. Cardboard spools need Bambu’s adapter rings or they shed and slip.
  • Clean winding. Tangles jam the AMS lite; reputable makers wind well.
  • RFID only on Bambu spools, and only a convenience.
  • Dry. The AMS lite is not sealed; keep spools in a dryer or dry box between prints, especially PETG.

Bambu’s PLA Basic and Matte are the RFID-tagged options for the AMS lite; the listed mid-range PLA from another maker is the value alternative that feeds just as well once you pick the profile. Add a high-speed PETG for functional parts.

Settings on the A1

  1. Use the Bambu Studio presets for the material; they are tuned for the hotend.
  2. Run the flow dynamics calibration on each new spool; it takes a minute and fixes most corner bulging.
  3. Dry PETG before loading. On the open A1, wet PETG strings across the whole plate.
  4. For TPU, load from the external holder, disable the AMS for that slot, and slow to 60 to 80 mm/s.

What to skip

Abrasive filaments on the stock nozzle: CF, glow and sparkle blends need the hardened nozzle and gears Bambu sells. And anything that needs an enclosure, until you build or buy one; see material choices.

FAQ

Can the AMS lite feed TPU? Bambu says no. Use the external holder.

Does the A1 need Bambu filament? No. Any 1.75 mm spool with a matching profile prints the same.

Can the A1 mini print PETG? Yes, with the same caveats: dry filament, textured plate, warm room.
