HMS 0C00-0300-0002-0017: Laser Engraving Z-Axis Focus Calibration Failed

HMS 0C00-0300-0002-0017 means the laser engraving Z-axis focus calibration failed, and the message asks you to check one specific thing: whether the laser test material, a 350 gram paperboard card, is properly placed with its surface clean and intact. That card is a measuring instrument, and most failures are a damaged one.
People treat the test card as packaging. It is not packaging; it is the reference.

Where to buy
Use the card you were given, not a substitute
The routine expects a known weight and finish. Ordinary cardstock from a stationery shop is lighter and differently coated, and substituting it means calibrating against the wrong reference rather than failing honestly. If yours is creased or scorched, get another from Bambu rather than improvising.
Store it flat and clean
A card kept in a drawer with tools arrives dented, and a dent is a height error. A rigid document folder keeps it flat and clean between calibrations, which is the entire maintenance requirement for the most overlooked part in the box.
Then make sure the bed under it is level and clear
Focus calibration measures height, so anything under the card becomes part of the answer. A honeycomb laser bed gives flat, even support and lets debris fall through instead of sitting under your reference, which is why it is worth having for laser work generally.
Check the machine is actually sitting level
A printer on a flexing shelf gives a different answer at the front than at the back. A small bubble level on the frame takes ten seconds and rules out a cause that otherwise looks like a module fault, in the same way a crooked module does in HMS 0C00-0100-0002-0006.
How HMS 0C00-0300-0002-0017 relates to thickness measurement
Focus depends on knowing where the surface is, so if thickness measurement is failing too you have one root cause rather than two. That code is HMS 0C00-0400-0002-0023.
If the optics are involved
A beam that measures wide will not focus cleanly either, and that reports separately as HMS 0C00-0200-0002-0002. Clean the optic before repeating this calibration. The platform is described in the Bambu Lab H2D.
HMS 0C00-0300-0002-0017 FAQ
Can I use any cardstock?
No. The weight and finish are part of the reference. Replace the card instead.
My card is scorched. Is that a problem?
Yes. The message says clean and intact, and a scorched patch is neither.
Does the bed matter?
Very much. Anything under the card becomes part of the height it measures.
How often is this needed?
After fitting or refitting the laser module, and whenever focus looks wrong.
