The Y axis did not reach its home position as expected. Something is adding resistance: debris on the rail, a print in the way, or a carriage that has been over-tightened. Feel the axis by hand before changing any setting.
Affected machines: A2L, P2S, X1 series. Homing is the machine establishing where the axis actually is, so a homing failure stops everything downstream of it.

Uniform drag and a tight spot are different faults
This distinction saves a lot of time. Drag that feels the same along the whole travel points at preload or lubrication across the rail. A tight spot in one place points at debris or damage at that place, and no amount of adjusting will fix it because the rest of the axis is fine.
Feeling the axis by hand with the power off is the fastest test available and it costs nothing. Do it before touching a grub screw.
Homing fails at startup or before a print, sometimes with a grinding or knocking sound
Debris on the Y rail, a print obstructing travel, or excessive carriage preload
- Power off at the wall and remove anything from the build plate.
- Push the toolhead through its full Y travel by hand and feel for a tight spot rather than uniform drag.
- Wipe the Y rail along its whole length with a dry cloth and look for grit or hardened grease.
- Check the cable chain is running freely and not catching at the end of travel.
- If one spot is tight, clean that section specifically; a tight spot is contamination or damage, not tension.
- Power on and home the axis while listening.

Can I home by hand first? Moving the head gently by hand to feel for a tight spot is a useful diagnostic. Do it with the power off.
Should I tighten the belt until it is very tight? No. Over-tension loads the bearings and shortens their life.
Why does it only fail sometimes? Marginal tension or a tight spot at one end of travel produces exactly that pattern.
Does the print need to be removed first? Yes, if anything is on the plate that the head could strike during homing.
