HMS 0300-0D00-0001-000C: heatbed levelling data abnormal

HMS 0300-0D00-0001-000C means the heatbed levelling data came out abnormal, and the printer asks you to check for foreign objects. That instruction is worth following literally before anything else, because levelling is a measurement and a measurement taken over a crumb records the crumb as part of the bed.
Affected machines: X1 series. The machine probes a grid of points and builds a map. It rejects the map when the points do not describe a plausible surface, which is a sensible check: a bed can be tilted or gently curved, but it cannot have a spike in the middle of it.

Where to buy
Four places debris hides
On the plate. Obvious, and the one people check. A blob of purge or a fragment left from removing a part.
Under the plate. Less obvious and more common. Anything on the magnetic base lifts the sheet and the sheet looks perfect from above.
On the nozzle. Easy to forget, because the nozzle is part of the measurement on these machines. A skirt of cooked filament makes the nozzle effectively longer and every point reads differently.
In the Z path. Something jamming the bed part way changes the geometry rather than a single point, which shows up as a map that makes no sense at all rather than one spike.
Levelling completes but the printer rejects the data, or aborts with abnormal levelling data
Debris on or under the plate, cooked filament on the nozzle, or an obstruction in the Z path
- Power off and let the bed and hotend cool enough to handle.
- Lift the plate off and clean both the underside of the sheet and the magnetic base.
- Clean the nozzle tip warm, at about 150 degC, with a brass brush.
- Wash the plate with dish soap and warm water and refit it square against its locating features.
- Look into the Z path with a torch for anything jamming the bed.
- Re-run levelling and read the resulting mesh. A single high point means debris; a low point that survives cleaning means a dent.
Do not simply re-run levelling and hope. A second measurement over the same crumb gives the same answer, and repeating it is how people conclude the machine is broken when the plate needed a wipe.

Why does the printer reject its own measurement?
Because the points do not describe a plausible surface. A spike in the middle of a bed is not a bed.
I cleaned the plate and it still fails. What should I check next?
Check underneath the sheet and on the nozzle. Both are part of the measurement and both get missed.
Can a dent be compensated?
A gentle curve, yes. A sharp dent, no, which is when a new sheet is the honest answer.
How often should I wash the plate?
With soap and water every few weeks of regular printing, and whenever adhesion starts to drift.
