Every spool you open starts absorbing water from the room. PLA gets away with it for weeks, PETG for days, nylon and TPU for hours. Storage is the cheap half of the moisture problem: keep the water out of a dry spool and you dry it far less often. The expensive half, drying wet filament, is a separate job with its own hardware. Most storage products get sold as if they do both. They do not.

What a storage system must do

  • Seal. A gasketed lid or a zip bag with a proper closure. A lid that clicks on is not a seal.
  • Hold desiccant. Silica gel by mass: roughly 50 g per spool in a small box, 500 g to 1 kg in a large bin. Colour-indicating beads tell you when to recharge them in an oven at 120 °C.
  • Show you the humidity. A cheap hygrometer inside, visible through the lid. Under 20 % is the target; 30 % means the seal or the desiccant has failed.
  • Fit your spools. Standard 1 kg spools are about 200 mm across and 65 to 75 mm wide. Check the internal dimensions, not the marketing size.

Individual boxes versus one big bin

Single-spool boxes with a desiccant tray keep each colour sealed independently, so opening one does not expose ten; they stack, and some have a PTFE outlet so you can print from them. The cost per spool is higher and each box needs its own desiccant. A large airtight storage bin from a hardware store holds eight to twelve spools with one kilogram of desiccant and one hygrometer for very little, but every time you open it the whole batch breathes room air. For a shelf of colours you use rarely, boxes; for the four spools you use every week, a bin or, better, a dryer with print-through feed.

Pick the one whose internal width fits your widest spool, and budget for a hygrometer if the set does not include one.

A routine that works

  1. Dry every spool once when you open it, then store it sealed. Storage keeps a dry spool dry; it does not fix a wet one.
  2. Put a hygrometer in every box or bin. If it reads above 25 %, recharge the desiccant.
  3. Recharge silica gel at 120 °C for two hours when the indicator changes colour. Reusable indefinitely.
  4. Print hygroscopic materials, PETG, TPU and nylon, from a dry box or the dryer, not from an open spool holder.

When storage is not enough

If a spool already strings, pops or prints rough, sealing it in a box with desiccant will take weeks to pull the water back out, if it ever does. That spool needs six hours in a dryer first. Storage is prevention; the dryer is the cure.

FAQ

Do vacuum bags work? Yes, with desiccant inside and a good valve. They are cheaper than boxes and take less shelf space, but a bag punctured by a spool edge stops working silently.

Can I store filament in the original bag? Only if it reseals with a proper zip and the desiccant packet is fresh. Most factory bags are single use.

How long does sealed filament last? Years for PLA, PETG and ABS if kept dry and out of sunlight. Nylon and TPU also, but confirm with a test print before a long job.
