Short answer

The Ender-5 Max is a 400 × 400 × 400 mm cube-frame printer with a 300 °C hotend, 100 °C bed, 700 mm/s rated speed and 20000 mm/s². It is the cheapest way to 400 mm from a mainstream brand and is built for large PLA and PETG. The open frame limits ABS at this size unless you add the optional enclosure. This page is based on manufacturer data and owner reports.

What 400 mm is for

Full-size helmets in one piece, cosplay chest plates, large planters and signage, and batch plates of dozens of small parts. The cube frame matters: at 400 mm a moving bed carries kilograms of print back and forth, which is why the Neptune 4 Max and Kobra 3 Max, both bedslingers, print large parts slowly. The Ender-5 Max only moves the bed in Z.

Materials

PLA and PETG are the machine’s home ground. ABS and ASA at 400 mm warp on any open frame, and the 100 °C bed does not change that; the optional enclosure brings ABS into reach for medium parts. Nylon and PC are outside its envelope. Match your filament list before you buy, and read enclosures if ABS is on it.

Against the alternatives

  • Kobra 3 Max Combo (420 × 420 × 500 mm bedslinger): bigger, adds ACE Pro multi-colour, but a moving 420 mm bed.
  • Neptune 4 Max (420 × 420 × 480 mm): cheaper, slower, 85 °C bed.
  • K2 Plus (350 × 350 × 350 mm): smaller but enclosed with a 60 °C chamber and 350 °C hotend; the choice if materials matter more than the last 50 mm.

The units in the box

The listings are the Ender-5 Max, the Kobra 3 Max for the bedslinger alternative and the K2 Plus Combo for the enclosed alternative.

FAQ

Is 700 mm/s realistic on 400 mm parts? No; flow through a 0.4 mm nozzle limits large parts to a fraction of that. Fit a 0.6 or 0.8 mm nozzle for big prints.

How long does the bed take to heat? Several minutes to 60 °C; longer in a cold room.
