ABS-Like Resin: What Makes It Tough, and When Standard Resin Is Not Enough

Short answer

Buy an ABS-like resin the first time a standard-resin print breaks in your hands. It is formulated to bend a little before it snaps, so functional parts, snap-fits, and miniatures with thin features survive handling. Detail is very slightly softer and exposure times are a little longer; for anything you will use rather than display, it is the better default.

“ABS-like” is a marketing term, not a chemistry, but it describes a real category: resins with impact modifiers that raise toughness and elongation compared with standard resin. Standard resin cures glassy and brittle; drop a miniature and something snaps. ABS-like formulations flex instead, and they take machining, tapping and snap-fit loads that standard resin cannot. The trade-off is a slightly longer exposure, a slightly softer surface, and a higher price per bottle.

What to look for

  • Published elongation and impact figures. Makers who quote them have tested them; the numbers vary widely between brands calling themselves ABS-like.
  • 405 nm, and exposure presets for your printer.
  • Low odour if you print indoors.
  • Colour. Grey shows detail best for checking prints; black hides layer lines; white is hardest to expose evenly.

Settings that work

  1. Exposure 10 to 20 % longer than the same brand’s standard resin; run the calibration print.
  2. Bottom layers 30 to 40 seconds; ABS-like resins need a firm weld to the plate.
  3. Warm the resin to 25 °C; cold ABS-like resin fails at the supports more than standard resin does.
  4. Wash thoroughly; tough resins are slightly more viscous and hold residue in corners.
  5. Cure fully but not excessively; over-curing removes the toughness you paid for. Watch for a spread base as a sign of over-exposure.

When standard resin is fine

Display miniatures that will not be handled, masters for moulding, and anything where maximum detail matters more than survival. Mix the two: standard for the display case, ABS-like for the gaming table.

Is ABS-like resin as tough as printed ABS filament? No. It is much tougher than standard resin; it is not an engineering plastic.

Can I mix ABS-like with standard resin? Same brand, yes, to tune toughness against detail. Re-run exposure calibration.

Why do my ABS-like prints fail at the supports? Cold resin or under-exposed supports. Warm it and add support exposure.
