Why size and enclosure belong together

A part shrinks as it cools, and the absolute shrinkage depends on its length. A 100 mm bracket in ABS pulls a little; a 320 mm panel in the same material pulls hard enough to lift its corners off any plate. That is why enclosure need rises with envelope, and why buying a large open machine for engineering materials is a purchase that disappoints slowly.

An enclosure keeps the air around the part warm so the layer below has not cooled past the point where the next one can bond to it. Our page on enclosed printers covers what that changes material by material.

Where it sits against the smaller model

The standard S1 is the same idea at a smaller size and lower price, and for most people it is the right one; our Kobra S1 review covers it. Step up to the Max when you have parts that genuinely do not fit, not for headroom. The larger machine heats slower, prints slower per part and costs more when a print fails.

What to check at this envelope

Bed flatness across 350 mm, because mesh compensation has limits and a dished plate shows up on every first layer. Frame rigidity, because a tall enclosed cube that flexes will ring. And your own part list: if nothing you print exceeds 250 mm, you are paying for volume you will heat and never fill.

FAQ

Is the enclosure actively heated? Check the specification for your unit. Passive enclosures help; active ones help considerably more.

Can it print ABS reliably at full size? Large flat ABS parts are the hardest case for any machine. Expect to tune, and expect an active chamber to matter.

Is it worth it over the standard S1? Only if your parts need the size. Otherwise the smaller machine is the better buy.

Does PLA print worse in an enclosure? It can, if the chamber gets hot. Open the door for PLA.
