3D Printer Buying Guide: Five Questions That Pick the Printer for You

Answer five questions in order. How big are your parts? Which filaments, honestly? Do you want multi-colour? How much do you want to tune? What is the budget? Most people end up at one of: Bambu A1 mini or A1 (PLA, PETG, low effort), Bambu P2S or Elegoo Centauri Carbon (adds ABS), Qidi Q2 or Creality K2 Plus (nylon, PC, size), Prusa (open source and support), or a resin printer if the parts are miniatures.

Question 3: multi-colour
If yes, buy a Combo: A1 mini or A1 Combo (open), P2S Combo or K2 Combo (enclosed), K2 Plus Combo (large). Accept purge waste; see multi-colour printers. If no, skip the feeder and spend on a spare plate and a dryer.
Question 4: how much tuning
None: Bambu. Some, and you want openness: Creality (Klipper), Prusa (open source). The build is the fun: Sovol SV08, Voron. See kits.
Question 5: budget
Under $300 buys an A1 mini or Ender-3 V3 KE; under $500 a P1S or Kobra S1 Combo; under $1000 a P2S Combo, K2 Plus or Qidi Plus 4. The bracket pages start at under $300.
What every first buyer should also budget for
- A second plate, a nozzle or two, a filament dryer if you live somewhere humid.
- Filament: three or four spools of PLA to learn on.
