Prusa XL Enclosure: Acrylic Kits vs Prusa’s Own, and What a 360 mm CoreXY Needs to Print ABS

Short answer

The Prusa XL prints ABS and ASA well once enclosed, and there are two routes: Prusa’s own enclosure, sold through Prusa, and third-party acrylic panel kits that mount to the XL’s frame. Either holds 40 to 50 °C from the 360 mm bed. Check that a kit clears the toolchanger’s parking positions and keeps the bottom electronics vented.

The XL is big, has a toolchanger with parked heads at the back, and puts its electronics in the base. An enclosure has to leave the tool docks room to operate, seal well enough to hold heat, and not smother the electronics. Prusa’s enclosure does all three by design; third-party acrylic kits do when they are made for the XL specifically, and their lower price is the reason they exist.

What to check

  • Made for the XL, single-tool or multi-tool version to match yours; the toolchanger needs clearance at the back.
  • Panels in acrylic or polycarbonate cut to the frame, with a front door and a removable or hinged top.
  • Bottom ventilation preserved for the electronics.
  • A vent port or filter mount for styrene.
  • Cable pass-throughs for the filament sensors and spool holders, which on the XL sit outside.

Using it

  1. PLA and PETG: door or vent open. A sealed chamber above 35 °C causes heat-creep clogs on a PTFE-lined hotend.
  2. ABS and ASA: close it, preheat with the bed at 100 °C for 15 minutes, keep part cooling low. Lifting means a cold chamber; cracks mean too much fan.
  3. Vent to a window or a carbon filter for ABS and ASA.
  4. Smoke detector above the enclosure, always.

FAQ

Does the XL need a heater for ABS? No; the large bed at 100 °C warms the chamber enough.

Can the toolchanger operate inside a kit? In XL-specific kits, yes; generic boxes often block the docks.

PLA with the enclosure on? Top off or door open; the XL gets warm inside.
