Short answer

For an MK4S, Prusa’s Original Enclosure is the purpose-built option: it fits exactly, keeps the electronics and PSU outside, and has add-ons for filtration and a filament sensor pass-through. A fabric tent does the thermal job for a fraction of the price with less finish; an IKEA Lack build sits between. All three hold ABS temperatures from the MK4S’s bed.

The MK4S is a bed-slinger with a moving Y bed and a spool on top, and Prusa designed their enclosure around exactly those dimensions, including a tall version for the spool. Third-party tents fit as long as the depth covers the bed travel and the height clears the spool holder or you move the spool outside. Prusa’s design also relocates the PSU outside the heated space; a tent keeps it inside, which is fine at 40 °C and is the caveat to remember.

What to check

  • Depth for the bed at its front stop plus 5 cm; height for the spool holder, or a plan to move the spool outside.
  • A vent port for ABS and ASA fumes.
  • PSU location; if it stays inside, keep the chamber under 45 °C.
  • Pass-throughs for the filament and the MK4S’s cables.
  • Flame-retardant material; smoke detector above.

Check depth and height against the MK4S with the bed forward and the spool fitted.

Using it

  1. PLA and PETG: door or vent open. A sealed chamber above 35 °C causes heat-creep clogs on a PTFE-lined hotend.
  2. ABS and ASA: close it, preheat with the bed at 100 °C for 15 minutes, keep part cooling low. Lifting means a cold chamber; cracks mean too much fan.
  3. Vent to a window or a carbon filter for ABS and ASA.
  4. Smoke detector above the enclosure, always.

FAQ

Does the MK4S need an enclosure for PETG? No. For ABS and ASA, yes.

Does Prusa’s Original Enclosure fit the MK4S? Yes; it was made for the MK3 and MK4 family.

Can I print PLA in the enclosure? Door open or top panel off; the MK4S hotend heat-creeps in a warm sealed box.
