HMS 0700-2000-0001-0084 means the AMS failed to read Slot 1 because the RFID tag may be damaged or positioned at the edge of the RFID antenna. The second half is the useful part: an undamaged tag in the wrong place reads exactly like a broken one.
Coupling between a tag and a reader falls off sharply with distance and offset. A centimetre matters.

Where to buy
Move the tag, do not replace it
Thin double-sided mounting tape lets you lift a tag and reseat it over the centre of the antenna without tearing it. Thick foam tape is the wrong choice here: it adds standoff, which is the thing you are trying to remove.
Place it in the same spot every time
A small steel rule turns “about there” into a repeatable measurement from the hub. Once you know the distance that works on your unit, every spool you tag afterwards reads first time.
Press it down without bubbles
An air pocket under a tag is extra standoff in the one place you cannot afford it. A plastic applicator card squeezes it out flat in a single stroke.
Then confirm with a known-good spool
Read a factory spool in the same slot. If that works and yours does not, the position is still wrong, and moving it ten millimetres inwards is usually the answer.
How HMS 0700-2000-0001-0084 differs from plain damage
The code that blames the tag alone is HMS 0700-2000-0001-0083. This one adds placement, so check where the tag sits before you throw it away.
When the reader is the problem
A unit that reads nothing anywhere points at HMS 0700-2000-0001-0081 and the main board. Antenna positions differ between units — see AMS versus AMS Lite and the AMS hub guide.
HMS 0700-2000-0001-0084 FAQ
Where should the tag go?
Centred over the antenna, flat against the hub face.
Does the spool material matter?
Metal reels can detune a tag. Cardboard and plastic do not.
Can I stack two tags?
No. They interfere with each other and neither reads.
How far out is too far?
Millimetres matter. Measure once, then reuse the figure.
