HMS 0500-0400-0001-0049: Communication Error With the AMS

HMS 0500-0400-0001-0049 means a communication error was detected with the AMS, AMS Lite or AMS HT, and asks you to reconnect the module cable or restart the printer. One cable carries that whole conversation, which is good news: there is only one thing to reseat.
Do the reconnect first. Then, if it returns, stop reseating and start measuring.

Where to buy
Watch the line rather than guessing at it
A small USB logic analyser clipped onto the data pair shows whether the printer is talking and the unit is answering. On an intermittent fault that is the difference between a week of swapping parts and an afternoon.
Break the link out so you can probe it
A set of jumper leads lets you bring the signals somewhere you can reach without piercing the loom. Piercing insulation to take a reading is how a diagnostic becomes a repair.
Handle the connector without bending pins
Ceramic-tipped tweezers will not short across a live pin the way steel ones can, and they are the right tool for lifting a small latch in a tight recess.
Then reseat properly, once
Power off, unplug, plug back in until it latches, power up. If the same code returns within a few prints, the cable or the connector is damaged rather than loose.
How HMS 0500-0400-0001-0049 differs from a module fault
A fault reported against the unit itself is HMS 0500-0300-0001-0003. This code is a communication failure on the link, which is a different repair from a module that has stopped answering.
When the buffer is involved too
The filament buffer has its own module code in HMS 0500-0300-0001-0004, and it shares a loom with the unit. The layout is in the AMS hub guide and the system in printers with an AMS.
HMS 0500-0400-0001-0049 FAQ
Which cable does it mean?
The module cable between printer and AMS. There is only one.
Does it affect all slots?
Yes. The whole unit goes quiet, not one slot.
Can I print meanwhile?
From the external spool position, yes.
Is a restart enough?
Often. If it returns, the cable needs looking at.
Another subsystem that hangs on one cable. HMS 0300-E000-0001-0001 means the hotend holder motor is disconnected or open circuit, and the message names the flat cable because that is what fails.
