HMS 0500-0400-0001-0003 — Print file unreadable, please resend
Short answer

HMS 0500-0400-0001-0003 means the content of the print file is unreadable and asks you to resend the print job. The file reached the machine and failed to parse, which usually means it was damaged in transfer or on the storage it came from.

Resending is the first step for a reason: a corrupted transfer leaves a file that looks the right size and is not.

It arrived, and then would not parse. Resend before you re-slice.
It arrived, and then would not parse. Resend before you re-slice.

Where to buy

Stop storing jobs on failing media

A small portable SSD is a far better home for sliced files than whatever drive has been in the bench for three years. Flash wears out silently, and a worn drive hands over files that pass a size check and fail a parse.

Use a card rated for constant writing

If the printer reads from a card, a high-endurance card of the sort sold for dashcams tolerates repeated rewriting in a way a cheap photo card does not. That is exactly the duty cycle a print machine imposes.

Keep one known-good drive for the printer

A dedicated USB 3 drive, used for nothing else, removes a whole class of mystery. Shared drives collect partial files from other machines, and those are what fail to parse.

Then re-slice, but only if resending fails

Resend the same file first. If it parses the second time, the file was never the problem and your storage or transfer was. Slicer output settings are covered in the monitoring guide.

How HMS 0500-0400-0001-0003 differs from a download failure

Nothing arriving at all is HMS 0500-0400-0001-0001. This code means the bytes arrived and were wrong, which points at media rather than at signal.

When the job stops after it started

A print that was running and will not pick up again is HMS 0500-0400-0001-0006, which is an interruption rather than a bad file. File handling basics are covered in firmware basics, and local printing in the X1 Carbon.

HMS 0500-0400-0001-0003 FAQ

Will re-slicing fix it?

Sometimes, but resend first: it is faster and tells you more.

Can a drive be the cause?

Yes. Worn flash returns bad bytes without reporting an error.

Which format should the drive be?

Follow the manual. Most want FAT32 or exFAT.

Does this damage the printer?

No. It refuses the file and stops.

Data that arrives and is wrong has its own family. HMS 0300-9300-0001-0003 means the chamber sensor at the air outlet may be short circuited, which reports a temperature nothing physical could reach.
