DLP 3D Printers: How They Differ From LCD Resin Printers, and Whether You Need One

A DLP printer projects each layer through a digital micromirror device and a lens, so there is no LCD to wear out and each pixel is sharply defined. The catch is optics: a projector’s pixel count is fixed, so pixel size grows with build area, which is why consumer DLP stays small. In 2026 mono LCD (MSLA) printers deliver 14 to 22 µm pixels at 7 to 10 inches for less, and the LCD is a cheap consumable. Buy DLP for a small, high-precision workhorse; buy MSLA for everything else.
Uncured resin is a skin and respiratory irritant. Wear nitrile gloves and eye protection, ventilate the room or vent the printer outdoors, wash parts in IPA in a covered container, and fully cure before handling. Never pour resin or IPA wash down a drain.

DLP vs MSLA
| Property | DLP | MSLA |
|---|---|---|
| Light path | Projector, DMD chip, lens | LED array through LCD mask |
| Wear part | Lamp or LED (long life) | LCD, 1000 to 2000 hours |
| Pixel definition | Sharp squares | Slight blur between pixels; often smoother surfaces |
| Resolution vs size | Fixed pixel count; larger bed = coarser | More LCD pixels at larger sizes (12K, 16K) |
| Typical build area | Small to medium | 7 to 15 inches |
| Price per volume | Higher | Lower |
| Consumer availability | Limited | Dominant |
Where DLP still wins
- Continuous operation: no screen replacement in production settings such as dental labs and jewellery casting.
- Dimensional accuracy on small parts, where a fixed sharp pixel and stable optics matter.
- Some engineering resins cure more predictably under the higher, uniform intensity a projector delivers.
Where MSLA wins
- Price per build volume, by a wide margin.
- Detail at 10 inches and above; a 12K LCD at 19 × 24 µm outresolves any consumer projector at that size.
- Speed: tilt-release MSLA machines reach 150 mm/h.
What to buy
For miniatures, models and general hobby resin, an MSLA machine: see SLA, MSLA and DLP explained for the list. For a small precision workhorse in a business, a DLP from a dental or jewellery supplier with a resin library to match; see engineering-type resins and resin types.
The units in the box
Consumer DLP printers are rarely listed on Amazon US. The listings are the MSLA machines most buyers end up with: the Elegoo Mars 5 Ultra, the Anycubic Photon Mono 4 and the Saturn 4 Ultra.
FAQ
Is DLP faster than MSLA? Both expose a whole layer at once; speed is set by resin and release mechanism, not by DLP vs LCD.
Do DLP prints look different? Sharper pixel edges on flat surfaces, sometimes visible as a fine grid; MSLA blur hides it.
