3D Scanners for 3D Printing: What Resolution You Need and Which Scanners Deliver

A 3D scanner for printing has two jobs: capture a part so you can reprint or modify it, and capture an object or person to print as a model. Fits need 0.05 to 0.1 mm accuracy, which means a structured-light or blue-laser scanner in the Revopoint MetroX class; sculpts and busts tolerate 0.3 mm, which the POP 4 class handles. Every consumer scanner struggles with shiny, black and transparent surfaces and needs scanning spray. Scanning is the start of a CAD job, not a replacement for one.

What accuracy each job needs
| Job | Accuracy needed | Scanner class | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reprint a broken bracket, clip or knob | 0.05 to 0.1 mm | Structured light or laser, tripod, turntable | Then rebuild in CAD from the scan |
| Fit a printed part to an existing object | 0.1 mm | Same | Scan the mating surface, not the whole object |
| Bust or figure of a person | 0.3 to 0.5 mm | Handheld structured light | Movement blur; scan fast |
| Sculpture, props, cosplay reference | 0.3 mm | Handheld | Texture capture useful |
| Large objects (car panels, furniture) | 1 mm | Handheld with markers or photogrammetry | Long scans; tracking loss |
Scanner types
| Type | How it works | Strength | Weakness | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Structured light (infrared or white) | Projects a pattern, cameras read distortion | Fast, colour texture, affordable | Shiny and black surfaces; sunlight | Revopoint POP 4, Creality scanners |
| Blue laser line | Sweeps laser lines, cameras triangulate | Accuracy, dark and shiny surfaces | Slower; no texture on some modes | Revopoint MetroX |
| Photogrammetry | Many photos, software reconstructs | Free, any size | Slow, inconsistent scale, poor on plain surfaces | Phone plus software |
What scanners cannot do
- Produce a printable CAD model. A scan is a mesh with noise; you clean it, then rebuild features in CAD for anything that must fit.
- Capture shiny, black or transparent parts without matte scanning spray.
- Read internal geometry: threads, bores and hidden faces need calipers and CAD.
Picks
- Reverse-engineering parts: Revopoint MetroX class blue laser. See Revopoint scanners.
- People, sculpts, cosplay: Revopoint POP 4 class handheld. See handheld scanners.
- Occasional and free: photogrammetry with a phone; then a printer that holds tolerance, see prototyping printers.

FAQ
Can I scan a part and print it directly? For sculpts, after mesh cleanup, yes; for fits, rebuild in CAD.
Do I need a turntable? For small parts, yes; it makes tracking reliable.
