HMS 0500-0400-0002-0035: Laser Module Needs Mounting Calibration

HMS 0500-0400-0002-0035 means the laser module needs calibration to find its focus position, and asks you to perform the mounting calibration before use. It takes about two minutes and it is not optional: an uncalibrated focus cuts at the wrong depth everywhere.
What it is really measuring is the distance from the lens to the work, so anything that changes that distance matters.

Where to buy
Give the work a surface that does not move
A honeycomb laser bed holds material flat, lets the beam exit cleanly and stops back-reflection marking the underside. It is the single biggest improvement to cut quality on a machine that did not come with one.
Check the module sits square
A precision machinist square against the module tells you whether it is mounted true before you calibrate. Calibrating a module that is sitting crooked stores the error rather than correcting it.
Calibrate on material you will actually use
Thin basswood ply is the standard reference for this: consistent thickness, consistent behaviour, cheap enough to burn a test grid on. Calibrating on a scrap offcut of unknown thickness defeats the measurement.
Then run the routine and keep the number
Let it finish, then write down the result. If the figure changes markedly next time, something in the mounting has moved and that is worth knowing. The platform and its modules are in the Bambu Lab H2D.
How HMS 0500-0400-0002-0035 depends on the camera
The camera has to be fitted first, which is HMS 0500-0400-0002-0030. The sequence is camera, then pose, then mounting calibration.
What to do once it is cutting
Lens contamination degrades focus too, which is HMS 0500-0400-0002-0041. Requirements and safety are in laser engravers on 3D printers.
HMS 0500-0400-0002-0035 FAQ
How long does it take?
About two minutes. Let it finish.
Do I redo it after removing the module?
Yes. Anything that changes the mounting changes the focus.
Can I skip it for engraving?
No. Engraving depth depends on focus as much as cutting does.
What material should I calibrate on?
Consistent thin ply. Unknown scrap gives an unknown result.
The cutting module has to find its reference as well. HMS 0300-2800-0001-0005 means Z-axis homing failed in cutting mode, and it names the Z slider and the synchronous pulley as the places to look.
