HMS 0500-0400-0002-0010: RFID Tag Cannot Be Identified

HMS 0500-0400-0002-0010 means the RFID tag on an AMS slot cannot be identified. The reader is working and getting either nothing or something it does not recognise, which points at the spool far more often than at the machine.
Third-party spools have no tag at all. First-party spools can have one that is damaged, covered or sitting away from the reader.

Where to buy
Use a spool the slot can read
A reusable spool made for the AMS lets you rewind third-party filament onto a body the machine understands, tag pocket included. It also removes the mess of cardboard spools shedding into the unit.
Label what the machine cannot read
Removable labels on the spool face are the low-tech answer: write the material and temperature yourself. The AMS will ask you to set it manually anyway, and a labelled spool makes that a two-second job.
Clean the reader window and the tag
Lint-free wipes take dust off the tag area without leaving fibres behind. A tag with a layer of PLA dust over it reads intermittently, which is worse to live with than not reading at all.
Then test the slot with a known spool
Move a spool that reads correctly into the failing slot. If it reads, the spool was the problem; if it does not, the slot is.
How HMS 0500-0400-0002-0010 differs from a connection fault
An AMS that is wired wrongly is HMS 0500-0400-0001-0025. This code is a reader that works and a tag it cannot make sense of.
What else dust affects
A dirty camera reports HMS 0500-0400-0002-0042 for the same underlying reason. The system is covered in printers with an AMS and the AMS hub guide.
HMS 0500-0400-0002-0010 FAQ
Do third-party spools have tags?
Almost never. You set the material by hand.
Can I print anyway?
Yes, once you tell the machine what is loaded.
Why does it read sometimes?
Dust or distance. Clean it and reseat the spool.
Is the reader replaceable?
Test with a known-good spool before assuming it failed.
