Key figures for Best Desiccant for Filament Storage: Silica Gel, Molecular Sieve, and How Much You Need: <20 % RH target, 120 °C to regenerate.
Short answer

Use colour-indicating silica gel beads: about 50 g per spool in a sealed box, recharged in an oven at 120 °C when the indicator changes colour. Molecular sieve pulls humidity lower and faster but costs more and gives no colour warning. Neither dries a wet spool; both keep a dry one dry.

Desiccant is the cheapest part of keeping filament printable and the most misunderstood. It cannot pull water out of a spool that is already wet in any useful time; that is a dryer’s job. What it does is hold the air in a sealed box at a humidity low enough that a dry spool stays dry for months. For that, quantity, a real seal and a way to know when the desiccant is saturated matter more than the type.

The types

  • Silica gel, indicating. Beads that change colour, typically orange to green or blue to pink, as they saturate. Reusable indefinitely after an oven cycle. The default.
  • Silica gel, plain. The packets that come in the filament bag. Works, but you cannot tell when it is full.
  • Molecular sieve. Zeolite that reaches lower humidity than silica gel and keeps working in warmer boxes. No colour indicator, higher price, recharges at a higher temperature. Worth it for nylon storage or a heated dry box.
  • Calcium chloride and clay. Cheap, single use, and calcium chloride turns to liquid brine as it saturates. Not for filament boxes.

How much

Roughly 50 g of silica gel per spool-sized container, and 500 g to 1 kg for a large bin holding eight to twelve spools. The target is under 20 % relative humidity on a hygrometer inside the box; if it will not get there with the lid shut, the seal is the problem, not the desiccant.

What to look for

  • Beads, not powder, in a breathable pouch or a printed container with a mesh lid. Loose beads in the box end up in the feed path.
  • Indicating colour you can see through the lid.
  • Bulk quantity. A kilogram bag is far cheaper than a dozen small packets and lasts for years with recharging.
  • A hygrometer per box. Without it you are guessing.

The boxes in the box

The listed products are sealing spool containers sold with desiccant trays and, in one case, labels and desiccant included. They are the right home for the desiccant; buy the silica gel in bulk separately and fill each tray, because the small packets shipped with boxes saturate in weeks.

Recharging

  1. Spread the beads on a tray and heat at 120 °C for two hours, or until the indicator returns to its dry colour.
  2. Let them cool in a sealed jar, not in the open, or they start reabsorbing before they reach the box.
  3. Do not microwave beads in a pouch; hot spots melt the pouch and can crack the beads.
  4. Molecular sieve needs 200 °C and more; check the supplier’s figure.

FAQ

Can desiccant dry a wet spool? Over weeks, a little. A dryer does it in hours. Use the desiccant to keep it dry afterwards.

How long until it saturates? In a well-sealed box, months. In a box opened daily, weeks. The colour tells you.

Is rice a desiccant? Barely. It absorbs a fraction of what silica gel does and sheds starch dust.
