3D Printers for Action Figures: Resin for the Sculpt, FDM for the Big Stuff

Action figures live or die on the face and the joints, which is resin territory: a 10-inch MSLA printer like the Elegoo Saturn 4 Ultra prints a 150 to 220 mm figure in pieces with 19 to 24 µm detail, and a Mars 5 Ultra handles 1:12 scale and smaller. Standard resin is too brittle for pegs and ball joints; use an ABS-like or tough resin for anything that moves. FDM takes over for statues above 250 mm, display bases, weapons and vehicles, where strength and size matter more than pores.
Uncured resin is a skin and respiratory irritant. Wear nitrile gloves and eye protection, ventilate, wash in IPA in a covered container, and fully cure before handling. Never pour resin or wash down a drain.

Which process for which part

Joints and tolerances
- Design pegs 0.1 to 0.2 mm under the socket and test a joint pair before the figure; resin shrink varies by brand.
- Print joints in a tough or ABS-like resin; see ABS-like resins. Flex resin blends for soft parts.
- Hollow torsos to 2 mm walls with drain holes; cure fully or joints creep.
- Orient so joint surfaces are not on the support side.
FDM for the large end
A 300 mm statue costs a fraction in PLA of what it does in resin, and sands to a paintable surface. Print at 0.12 mm layers with a 0.4 mm nozzle, matte PLA, and split along costume seams. See FDM for miniatures for settings, and printers for miniatures for the small end.
