HMS 0700-2000-0002-0012 — Feeder motor overloaded, spool will not turn
Short answer

HMS 0700-2000-0002-0012 means the AMS A Slot 1 feeder motor is overloaded and unable to rotate the spool. The motor is alive and trying, so this is a mechanical resistance problem: the spool itself will not turn freely.

That narrows it usefully. A motor that draws too much current is being asked to turn something that is stuck.

The motor is working. Something is stopping the spool turning.
The motor is working. Something is stopping the spool turning.

Where to buy

Check that the spool turns by hand first

Lift it out and spin it. A spool that drags on the bench will drag in the AMS, and no electrical repair changes that. Low-friction bearing rollers under the spool remove the resistance entirely on units where the spool rides on plain plastic.

Move the filament to a reel that does turn

Third-party spools vary in hub bore and width, and one that is a fraction too wide binds against the slot walls whatever you do to it. A quick-swap reusable spool lets you transfer the filament onto a reel the AMS was designed around, which solves the whole family of badly made spools at once.

Replace the bearings, do not oil them

If the resistance is in the mechanism rather than the reel, worn 608 bearings in the rollers are the usual answer and a pack of twenty costs less than a spool of filament. Oil is the wrong fix here: it collects dust, and dust in an AMS ends up on the filament.

Then look for a tangle under the outer wrap

A single crossed wrap tightens as the spool turns and eventually stops it dead. Unwind a metre by hand and look at the layer underneath before deciding the hardware is at fault.

How HMS 0700-2000-0002-0012 differs from a silent motor

A motor that is not responding at all gives HMS 0700-2000-0002-0013. Overload means the motor is driving and losing, which is a far better position to be in.

When it shows up as a timeout instead

Marginal resistance often appears first as HMS 0700-2000-0002-0011, a retraction that never finishes. Spool handling on these units is covered in printers with an AMS and reel quality in the best filament brands.

HMS 0700-2000-0002-0012 FAQ

Is the motor damaged by this?

Not usually. It stops rather than burning out.

Are cardboard spools a problem?

They can be. They swell with damp and bind on the sides.

Should I oil the mechanism?

Not with wet oil. Use a dry PTFE lubricant if anything.

Why only one slot?

Because the resistance is in that reel or that slot, not the unit.

A motor can also turn without taking the filament with it. HMS 0700-2000-0002-0016 means the assist motor slipped and ground a flat on the filament, and the message tells you to cut that section off.
