Flashforge Multi-Colour: The AD5X, and Why the 5M Cannot Be Upgraded

Flashforge multi-colour means the AD5X: the Adventurer 5M CoreXY frame with a built-in four-spool filament system feeding one nozzle. The 5M and 5M Pro have no port for it and cannot be upgraded. Like every single-nozzle system it purges on each change, so small multi-colour parts waste a lot of filament. It competes with the Bambu A1 Combo and Creality K2 SE with CFS.

How it works and what it costs
Four spools feed one hotend. At each colour change the printer retracts, loads the next filament and purges the old colour into a waste chute. On a four-colour keychain the purge can weigh more than the part. Slicer settings that reduce flush volumes and use purge as infill are the main lever. This is the same mechanism as the Bambu AMS lite and Creality CFS; see the A1 Combo page for the same trade-off.
Why the 5M cannot be upgraded
The AD5X has a different top assembly, filament path and firmware. Flashforge sells no add-on for the 5M or 5M Pro. Owners who want multi-colour buy the AD5X or change ecosystem; the 5M remains a single-colour machine.
Alternatives
- Bambu A1 Combo: 256 mm bedslinger with AMS lite and deeper automation.
- Creality K2 SE or K2 Combo with CFS: enclosed, sealed spool storage, RFID.
- Bambu P1S or P2S Combo: enclosed with the most mature multi-colour ecosystem.
The units in the box
The listings are the AD5X, the Adventurer 5M for the single-colour baseline and the Creality K2 Combo as the enclosed alternative.
FAQ
Is the AD5X enclosed? No.
Does it dry filament? Treat the feeder as storage unless the listing states drying.
